Friends, that month of glorious, gorgeous, occasionally messy and yet somehow always mesmerizing self-portraits, is almost upon us—yes! It’s #Selfietember!!
For the rundown on #Selfietember, you can click here, but the idea is simple: September = self-portraits. You decide on the tools—analog, digital, sketchbook, watercolor block, what have you. Pens, pencils, markers thick to thin, stylish stylus, groovy gouache, all the watercolors in your favorite colors, a few in your least-loved hues. Keep it consistent or mix it up; the choice is yours.
Now, you can do your selfies freestyle—I’m all about letting that creative spirit move you, and you can do a different style of selfie every day. Still, we’re talking 30 self-portraits here, so there may be some days when you look at yourself and ask yourself, “Whatwhatwhatwhatwhat?” Hence: les prompts.
#Selfietember 2024: Drawing Challenge + Prompts = Yay
Two things I know from a couple years of working in the art-lovin’, art-learnin’ community: people love challenges, and people love drawing prompts. Getting a list of drawing prompts is like being handed a menu with only one page; takes all the confusion away so you can get to the good stuff.
So! We have our 30-day challenge, and now we have the Insanely Official #Selfietember Drawing Prompts!! Use these throughout the month, or whenever you’re not sure what to order for your breakfast with a side of self-portrait.
You’ll see a bunch of WILD CARDS in the prompts. Those mean your choice of how you want to draw yourself. They’re added for variety, and also because there are only 26 letters in the English language alphabet, while there are 30 days in September. This means I am not as bad at math as I thought.
Show Off Your Selfies!
I want to see your self-portraits! Where to share? Well, you could put them on social media, but social media these days: bleh. I mean, don’t let me stop you, but I’m on a bit of a social media fast lately (and I have to say, I’m happier for it), and I want to cheer you on. Breaking news: I started a #Selfietember Chat! There, we can post photos of our selfies, and we can all Oooh and Ahhh and cheer each other on. (Needless reminder, as you are all lovely and gentle souls: be kind, and no artsy feedback unless it is requested by the selfie-poster.) Post your thrilling #Selfietember portraits here:
Happy #Selfietember, amazing people! Any questions? Pop ‘em in the comments!
This year’s #Selfietember is dedicated to my friends Arlene Weberg and Lorraine Weberg, who lift this world up with their art and goodness. 🙏💖

Oh please help! How does one send a Substack message? It seems as if it should be obvious to me, but it isn’t. I want to share my selfies (even off prompt) with you. And see others.
