WRASSLIN' CENTAURS #5
Family, amirite?
Boop that heart, make a Gorgon smile! Which they don’t do easily!
Recap: When we last saw former-almost-supermodel Centaur Jerry Spellman, he’d just lost his art modeling job to AI (boo!!) and came to the last desperate move to get the money he needs to pay his landlady three months’ back rent. This comic is rated TFE for Totally Fine for Everyone (meaning, no cussin’ this time—don’t get used to it!)
Congratulations to Julie and Mitch! But…what’s the baby gonna be?
A li’l background: In this world, Humans started inexplicably giving birth to Creature babies 125-ish years ago. Thus, Jerry’s innocent, kinda hopeful question about what kind of baby this might be. Time for a baby poll pool!
You may also notice that one of these things is not like the others—Jerry’s a Centaur, while the rest of his fam is 100 percent two-legged Humans. Reasons for that are not as stated above, but will be revealed in the next episode of…WRASSLIN’ CENTAURS!!

The little extras you may have missed, or I may not have explained yet…
After Jerry gets sideswiped by the car veering into the bike/Centaur lane on the highway, he takes a little pause by the side of the road. The sign reads 2 miles to Doria, where his family lives. Doria = the fictional home of Doric columns, one of the three styles of columns found in Ancient Greek architecture. As I explained in a recent comic, Doria and its neighboring burg, Ionia, are in fierce competition as to which makes the best columns. (Corinth, the third column manufacturing city, stays smugly out of the debate.)
At the bottom of that panel is a horned toad, a non-Mythological creature that turns up in this world and comic from time to time. I feel like “BLERM” really sums up a lot.
When Jerry enters his family’s home, peer closely and you’ll see one of the paintings from fine artist Herb Deetz’s gallery on the wall. This one is Jerry as Narcissus, of course. It cost the Spellmans a pretty obol, even with Herb’s friends-and-family discount.
Hay what? In this world, Centaurs—who have two stomachs, one in the upper body, one in the lower—can’t eat Human food without hay to help with digestion. Grass can be eaten in a pinch, but it’s not as effective or tasty. Emma’s a bit concerned about Jerry going without his side o’ hay.
Planning legs: One of the things I wanted to communicate quickly, without saying it, is that Jerry’s family is not like him—they’re two-legged Humans. We saw Mom’s legs when she answered the door. Then, I had Dad descending the stairs to show his legs, and little sister Emma leaping on her brother to show hers.
As will become apparent, Jerry and Emma are very close. She idolizes her very big brother, who is ten years older than she is, and he adores being her big brother. Jerry and Julie are not as close; she became a very jealous formerly only child when—OOOOOPS getting ahead of myself here! More will be revealed sooooooon!
In Other News…
I’ve been working on comics obsessively for the past two and a half years, and I realized I was gettin’ burnt out like crispy tempeh bacon and that I needed a non-comics practice. Cue the entrance music: bring back my sketchbook!
I had a great time at a recent Zoom sketch party hosted by Samantha Dion Baker, who had a special guest—my buddy Koosje Koene! Two super-inspiring sketchbook goddesses in one place: mind blown. And burnout cured!
Koosje had us drawing with our non-dominant hands, which made my brain itch in all the best ways. And I made this:
This was so much fun. If you need a nice online sketch party, both Sam and Koosje have regular ones, Sam here on Substack at Samantha Dion Baker , Koosje on her Patreon (which you can find in the menu on her website).
I recently had a very sketchy weekend (sounds shady, wasn’t, LOL), and I’ve decided to start being even sketchier. Look for more sketchbook stuff around here with the tag Living a Sketchy Life! For some sketchy inspo, check out The Books That Make Me Want to Make Art.
That’s all for now, friends! I want to thank all of you for being here, and much gratitude to recent new paid subscribers and founding members for their support!
Remember: WRASSLIN’ CENTAURS love youuuuuuu….
